Maths
At Ivy Road, we follow the Professional Development materials shared by the NCETM. The materials break down the concepts to be learnt into coherent and connected steps. They illustrate how the mathematics can be taught in a way that provides access for all pupils and develops mastery of mathematics.

Maths Mastery
The National Centre Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) outlines five big ideas that underpin teaching for mastery: Coherence, Representation and Structure, Mathematical Thinking, Fluency, and Variation. These ideas are interconnected concepts that work together to create a deeper and more secure understanding of mathematics for all pupils.
Coherence:
Our lessons are designed to build upon each other, creating a logical and connected progression of mathematical ideas. This means that new concepts are introduced in a way that makes sense in relation to what pupils already know and prepares them for future learning.
Representation and Structure:
At Ivy Road, mathematical concepts are presented in multiple ways, using concrete manipulatives, visual representations, and symbolic notations. This helps students understand the underlying structure of the math and make connections between different representations.
Mathematical Thinking:
Pupils are encouraged to think critically, reason logically, and make connections between different mathematical ideas. This involves developing problem-solving skills and the ability to explain their reasoning.
Fluency:
Pupils develop both procedural fluency (being able to carry out calculations accurately and efficiently) and conceptual fluency (understanding the underlying mathematical principles).
Variation:
Concepts are explored through different examples and contexts, helping students to generalise their understanding and see the connections between different mathematical ideas.
